Eco-Education
Eco-Education goes back to our natural curiosity about the world around us. It encourages people young and old to explore, discover, and learn about their surroundings. It can be as simple as exploring a tide pool with a knowledgeable friend, or as involved as a multi-day hiking trip with a guide to observe and monitor coastal bird behavior.
Eco-education offers people a chance to learn about natural areas, environmental issues, and provides an experience they can relate to. And, by learning about a local ecosystem, you learn why you should care about it. If you care about your local beach, you'll help protect and take care of it.
An afternoon spent learning about and experiencing tide pool creatures just might inspire an otherwise disinterested person to get involved with coastal stewardship causes.
What can you do
Share your love for the coast with your friends. Nothing inspires people to learn about and understand something like an enthusiastic, passionate teacher. Get a local beachcombers guide, bird guide, or other nature book and go out exploring.
If you prefer structured or guided learning activities, check with your local nature center, library, beach authority, or community center. Many local colleges and community centers offer classes, field trips, and other guided nature learning experiences too.
